Mildred Pierce. 1 hour & 50 min. Amazon TV. This 1945 classic film noir of an uber-sacrificing mother and her spoiled brat daughter richly deserved its 6 Oscar nominations and Joan Crawford’s Best Actress win. As a POGO yourself, you’ll find yourself shouting, “Don’t do it, Mildred!” every time she indulges her older daughter, Veda, so the girl can have all the things she, herself, didn’t have growing up. Unsurprisingly, since Veda was the original Material Girl, things end really, really badly for all concerned. The 2011 miniseries of the same name starring Kate Blanchett got good reviews, but I’m afraid I can’t give you my opinion of it because I just didn’t have the heart to spend another 5 hours with Mildred knowing what Veda was going to do to her.
